Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Henry Brewerton was born in New York City, New York. He lost his parents at a very early age, but, under the guardianship of future Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States Daniel D. Tompkins, entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, two months before his 12th birthday - making him the youngest cadet in the history of West Point.
